Monet's Baozi

Food Design (2018)

Runze Feng

Baozi, a traditional Chinese food featuring fillings encased in dough, typically displays a white exterior. Inspired by Monet’s Le Bassin Aux Nymphéas, the artist has reimagined these culinary staples by infusing their dough skins with four distinct hues extracted from the Impressionist masterpiece. This chromatic transformation evokes the floating nymphéas (water lilies) of Monet's pond, fusing Eastern culinary heritage with Western art history. Through this creative intervention, the artist bridges two divergent cultural expressions, rendering them accessible across diverse cultural contexts. Within this framework, food transcends sustenance to become a vessel of culinary diplomacy—a tangible conduit for dialogue between cultures and communities.
