Europe
Video Installation (2017)
Runze Feng
Documenting the optical residues of Santiago Sierra's "Europe Long Play"
(Kronprinzenpalais, Berlin)
This durational video work emerged from improvized observation before Sierra's seminal sound installation. Through deliberately defocused cinematography, dancing dust particles become luminous choreographies against a blurred ground – where faint contours of the original installation materialize through symmetrical central perspective.
Dust operates here as a phenomenological conduit:
- Temporal mediator crystallizing histories yet unwritten
- Transnational connector traversing bodily and geopolitical boundaries
Sierra's foundational act – the deconstructed anthem of 27 EU nations – reverberates as conceptual scaffolding. Much like the suspended particulates caught in perpetual flux, the artist proposes Europe's political consciousness exists in ceaseless morphogenesis.
